    HI I'M DEREK

    SEASCAPE & COASTAL ARTIST

I feel at home near the sea.

I love the ocean, in fact anything nautical, I have been influenced by it all my life. The colours and the drama of the ever-changing light. Boats, marinas, beaches, sea life and of course the big blue and how it creates so many patterns, textures and colours reflecting the weather. There is always something new to look at. Currently my work is focused on the Hebridean Islands and the West Coast of Scotland.

The Hebrides, Islands Shaped by the Wind

The ever-changing weather, pristine beaches and the Jurassic cliffs surrounded by turquoise water.
Every time I visit these islands I am inspired to paint.

See how the rugged coastline inspires me.

Goodchild Art… The Story So Far

Latest Canvas

The beach at Mangersta is open to the Atlantic, during or after a storm large waves barrel onto the beach. Illuminated by bright sunlight, the white foam contrasts with the blues and turquoise of the water. I watched from a cliff as two oystercatchers, with their striking black and white plumage, gracefully fly through and over the waves.

I like these boots!

A lot of the time I am standing whilst painting and wearing this type of boot really does ease the aches and pains of a day at the canvas.

My brother Phil bought them for me many years ago when he insisted I was coming walking through the Cotswolds with him on holiday and I found these were super comfortable for rambling around that beautiful part of the country. Since then they have seen many, many miles, most of those along the local beach paths and country estates in all weathers. Sadly I noticed they had begun to lose their waterproofing, but as I found them so comfortable they have now found a new use…

Where Next… Tiree

The sunshine island of Tiree, the most westerly island of the Inner Hebrides.

Tiree is best known to be one of the sunniest places in Britain. Popular with kite, wind and board surfers as the island is open to the Atlantic. I love its wonderful beaches and the big skies.
